Under the heading of personal influences, contributing factors are:

  • Self-care.
  • Practice of healthy behaviors.
  • Follow through on necessary care.
  • Use of available information that compares quality of care.

Under the heading of community and societal influences, contributing factors are:

  • A healthy environment.
  • A healthy community.
  • Education.
  • Jobs.
  • Gender/race discrimination.
  • Social priority on quality of care.
  • Health care system focused on quality improvement.

Under the heading of access to care, contributing factors are:

  • Affordability of care.
  • Insurance coverage.
  • Availability of providers and specialists.

Under the heading of technical and clinical quality of care, contributing factors are:

  • Disease management.
  • Continuity of care.
  • Getting the right thing.
  • Getting it done right.

Getting the right thing and getting it done right are currently being explored.

Under the heading of care relevant to individuals, contributing factors are:

  • Cultural competence.
  • Respect for patient preferences.
  • Family support.

Cultural competence, respect for patient preferences, and family support are currently being explored.

Under the heading of public accountability, oversight, and regulatory authority, contributing factors are:

  • Consumer and patient protection.
  • Requiring disclosure of comparative performance information.
