What We Have Learned about Architecture and Interior Design

This presentation will discuss research into the relationship between the interior design of healthcare facilities and patient outcomes/satisfaction and patient and staff safety. It will provide examples of staff impact on design issues relating to safety, control, and comfort.

The Visual Arts in the Design Process—Artists' Role in Creating a Healing Environment
Jane Beebe, President, PDX Gallery

This presentation will describe issues and processes in working with artists during the construction of the Dornbecher Children's Hospital in Portland. It will describe how and by whom the ground rules were laid in this model program to assure that the artists had appropriate information about the needs of patients and staff.

Caring for the Caregivers—Arts and Humanities Programs that Restore the Individual and Celebrate Community
Janice Palmer, Director Emeritus, Cultural Services, Duke University Medical Center

This presentation will focus on model programs in a variety of healthcare settings that address the well-being of patients, family, and staff. It will discuss the growing awareness of the importance of "caring for the caregivers" and that how arts and humanities programs are making a significant impact on this issue.
